The Ultimate Guide to Maximizing Your Natural Strengths

Are you tired of work feeling like a four-letter word? Everybody says that you’ll enjoy your work and be more successful if you maximize your strengths, but how do you do that? You have a job that seems to offer no opportunity at best, and feels dead-end at worst.

Transform Your Ennui into Exhilaration

Regardless of where you are in your career, you CAN take control and turn ho-hum into fun. And who doesn’t want to have fun at work? Imagine waking up every morning, excited about what’s awaiting you at the office. Imagine loving your work so much that you lose track of time. Does this sound impossible? Well, it isn’t!

Here’s How You Access Your Super Powers!  

1. Know Your Strengths: It sounds obvious that you have to know your strengths to maximize them, but the real question is: how? Here are several strategies:

  • Take assessments such as Strengthsfinder 2.0, the MBTI, or any number of other assessments;
  • Pay attention to what colleagues and others say about you and notice what they come to you for; and
  • Identify the paid or volunteer work (or classes) that you’ve enjoyed most and dig deep—uncover the skills and strengths you used.

2. Identify Your Passions: You’ll be more fulfilled using your strengths if you can find work that you’re passionate about. Are you passionate about helping others, the environment, or something else? Get clear about what gives you purpose and meaning by paying attention to what you pay attention to.

3. Look For and Generate Opportunities: Now that you know your strengths and what gives you meaning, you need to focus on making it happen. This means:

  • Looking for opportunities, both inside and outside the workplace. Volunteer for projects—it’s a great way to get experience and meet people with similar interests. Don’t forget: expanding your network can only lead to more opportunities!
  • You may need to generate your own opportunities. Do you see a gap in services or processes at work? If it speaks to you, ask your manager if you can fix it. Do you see a need that a volunteer organization could, but isn’t yet, fulfilling? Offer to help by taking the lead!

4. Be OK with Being Uncomfortable: If you’re stretching past your comfort zone—and we hope you are—you’re doing it right. Expect to be nervous. Being nervous doesn’t mean you’re not on the right track; it just means you’re stretching beyond what you’ve been doing, which is what you’re game for, right? My advice is to regularly get out of your comfort zone so that the nerves lessen and even become normal.
